Pages: 55 73

Abstract

This work presents a detailed iconographic analysis of a snuff tray in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, Colorado (USA). This object, without provenience or archaeological context but with clear Tiwanaku iconography, has been selected to test the hypothesis that this iconographic system is independent of exclusive political entities, and that it is not the expression of a constant ideology throughout the Tiwanaku sphere of influence. Due to its portability, the snuffing paraphernalia is of broad geographical distribution and exhibits a complex iconography allowing a detailed study. The iconographic analysis reveals multiple structural elements and diverse modalities of organization. That diversity is evident when the different manifestations of the so-called Tiwanaku iconographic system are compared.
