Study on the active substance of the Yagé

Abstract

Absorption and disposal. The absorption by the epidermis is nil. The absorption by the digestive way is rapid: between 15 and 20 minutes, general phenomena are already observed. Subcutaneous absorption is done in a time that usually ranges from 10 to 15 minutes. The elimination is done by the urine, to which it communicates a green-yellow coloration. The absorption appears to take place through the vein: if a rat is attached to a leg at the root of the member and injected into it a solution of the alkaloid sulphate, even after half an hour no symptoms are present; the link is sufficient to release the general phenomena of poisoning within five minutes. Toxicity. Three centigrams of alkaloid sulphate in aqueous solution produce in the frog disrupted balance. A higher dose, seven centigrams, brings death in the space of two hours with stupor. The rat and the rabbit with ten centigrams of the alkaloid sulfate, in aqueous solution, have symptoms of loss of balance, with tremor and motor incoordination. In man, the intake of small doses produces dreams. High doses, poisoning. Digestive device. The preparations of Yagé have a slightly bitter and spicy taste that causes the reflective saliva to be discarded. High doses cause heat in the epigastry and weak intestinal colic. Respiratory appliance. In the frog, rat and rabbit there is an increase in the number of breaths. There's a delay in man. High doses cause this last dry in the larynx. With small doses, there is a decrease in the number of pulsations. In some cases, the tension seems to be increasing. Nervous system. At small doses it produces a pleasant feeling of wellbeing and serenity and pleasant dreams. At high doses there are hallucinations, headache, ear buzzing, vertigo, precordial oppression and distress and subjective sensations, such as numbness of the lower members, visual disturbances: hemianopsy and vision of blue spots and a feeling of cold on the back.
