When carrying on research regarding the use of beverages, and more especially of narcotics, by members of Indian tribes, one should give attention to such considerations as the following: the plants of which use is made, their names and the meaning of these names, the portion of each pIant which furnishes the narcotic, the ways of its extraction, the circumstances under which it is consumed, the attitudes of other members of the tribe toward those who use it, special seasons of the year, or other occasions, on which the narcotic is taken, and its value in the treatment of disease and in divining future events.
