Hallucinogens used by the Indians of the Amazon and Alto Orinoco

Pages: 784 - 792

Abstract

The study of the composition of the seeds used for epena and malpighiacea used for the preparation of the parica indicates the presence of two alkaloids and precisely of tryptamine derivatives in the case of epena and of harmine derivatives in the case of parica. It is interesting to note on the basis of these initial observations that while preparations containing alkaloids of the Harmine group seem to predominate among the Indians of the upper part of the Rio Orinoco (Tukano, Triana, Surara and Pakidai) appear to predominate preparations containing alkaloids of the Harmine group. Unlike Harmine-based hallucingens, which are also used orally, such as in caapi drinks, there are no indications that epena, containing derivatives of tryptamine, are used just but by inhalation.
