From the leaf of Lespedeza bicolor var. japonica was obtained, in addition to small amounts of N,N-dimethyl-tryptamine (I), a new alkaloid, C13HlSN2O, Sdp'0.28 113°-114°. It shows a positive Erlich reaction, a methoxy group in the NMR spectrum and, in the hydrogenation with Pd/coal, passes quantitatively into DMT. On account of the UV, IR and NMR spectra, the new alkaloid for which the name Lespedamine is proposed contains a CH3-O-N- group and has the structure of the 1-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine.
