During one year from April 1968 to March 1969, I stayed in Eastern Peru to gain insight into the lifestyle of two tribes belonging to the Arwak-language group, the Piro and the Matsigenka. in November and December 1968, I traveled some of the Piro villages located at the Rio Urubamba, including Puiha, where there was an opportunity to attend a ayahuasca session held by some Puiha-based Piro.
All these information indicates that the ayahuasca drink in the field of Piro culture can only be understood against the entire background of religious ideas: it enables the shaman to connect closely with the supersensory powers and thus ensures the entire Piro group to communicate with these powers at any time.
