Indigenous rock paintings of the Sierra de Arica.

Abstract

The paintings of Vilacaurani, Yerbagüenane, Alcacaurani e lncani, were found and recorded in June 1968. In November of that year we excavated the first of the sites and prospected the Incani cave. In April 1969, in collaboration with Dr. Vaclav Solé, we recordeded paintings and petroglyphs from seven caves of Tangani and the paintings of Toncolaca and Cunturchucuña. On this occasion we dig polling wells in Tangani and in the caves of Toncolaca, and we complete the digging of the Incani 1 cave, apart from discovering other paintings in its neighborhood. Recently - July 1971 - we have met other coats with naturalistic paints in the upper basin of the Camarones River, which we will make known another time. The main purpose of this work is to describe the manifestations of this art and the archaeological materials of the excavations, but we consider it necessary to place the not specialized reader in both the geographical area in which such indigenous relics are found and within the cultural framework to which they are integrated. In addition, we present a synthesis of the parietal art of the entire Arica department.
