Peyote and ayahuasca in new American mystery religions.

Pages: 65 - 86

Abstract

It is worth mentioning the fact that some of the collectives with mystical interests - the churches of peyote and ayahuasca, with the exception of the UDV - are open to the use of other enteogens than traditional ones in each religion. S. Mota tested psilocybic fungi and learned to use them in their rites; his son Alfredo de Melo, current Daimist leader, also shows himself open to experimenting with enteogenes other than daime and even, following suggestions of ethnobotanics, to elaborate its sacred mixture with vegetable analogues of the various traditional specimens. Even there was a meeting in 1997 between peyote church leaders and the Daimist Ieaders to exchange experiences and vegetables enteogens. In the thread of the above, it can only be summed up that these various enteogenic churches represent a rebirth of original paths towards intense spirituality and numinous experience. It can now be considered one of the most important social experiments of consuming visionary substances by stable western groups and united towards a non-militaristic purpose. At the same time, it is likely to be one of the best contributions to contemporary societies, from American Indigen peoples.
