Presently, a growing concern in indigenous ritual practices, which used plants to establish means of contact with the supernatural world, has been observed. In Brasil, members of the Uniao do Vegetal (UDV) and Santo Daime currently use a beverage prepared from Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis, that contains harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine and N,N- dimethyltryptamine, which are potent hallucinogens. In the statement of users, the toxic effects are under-estimated and attributed to the spirit's purification. However, due to the modification of use's finality, it's important to emphasize that risk assessment is not completely enlightened and great attention must be done by the health professionals.
