Tobacco and shamanic ecstasy in the Warao Indians of Venezuela.

Abstract

Tobacco was venerated by the American peoples for its medicinal properties long before the West adopted it. Warao Indians of Venezuela, for example, also attribute to him hallucinogenic virtues. The author tells us the psychedelic journey of Shaman apprentices: magic smoke floats from their gigantic cigars and guides them to the boundaries of the universe, where the Great Kanobo Spirits resides.
