Tiwanaku Iconography in South Central Andean Snuffing Paraphernalia.

Abstract

This work presents an analysis oJTiwanaku iconography depicted on snuffing equipment, reJerring to other media when appropriate. This hallucinogenic equipmentJacilitates a basic study oJTiwanaku:S iconographic configuration because oJits specificJunction, duration and widespread distribution . The snuffing kit consists ofa distinct set of implements: a small rectangular tray, a snuffing tube, a small spoon, and leather pouches thatjilllctioned as snujfpowder containers. I have documented 84 sn uff trays and 23 snuffing tubes with Till'anaku iconography. Their geographical distribution is noted and the major themes represented are discussed.
