Ethnomedicine as an economic factor: The case of Western Amazonia.

Pages: 24 - 25

Abstract

Western Amazonia, as the region of the Western tributaries of the Amazon from southern Colombia to Bolivia, is exceptionally popular in ethnomedicial discourse. The reason for this is ayawaska. It is usually assumed that this hallucinogenic substance, which is generally obtained from two components, mostly from strains of the liane banisteriopsis caapi and leaves of the shrub psychotria viridis, has been used for therapeutic purposes since immense times of indigenous indigenous people of the amazonian land.
