Abstract

Based on field research on the Shamanism of the Amerindians, analyses of the writings of neo-shamans, “new agers” and New Druids, medieval texts and books of Celtic worlds, this article shows that New Age and Neo-Paganism take on many ideas from animist and shamanic societies. Sioux Lakotas authors have adopted the holistic beliefs of the magico-esoteric movement, with borrowings from “spiritual knowledge of the old Celts and their druids”. Modern Chamanes and Druids seek to translate “foreign” into modern terms to transmit them to future generations. They innovate by updating ancestral knowledge to develop the “psychotherapeutic” aspects. Their spiritual activities demonstrate the dynamism of the Shamanic and Gentile traditions in the modern world.
