Monoamine oxidases are inhibited in smokers. Their inhibition can increase the effects of nicotine. The increase in the addictiveness of nicotine through inhibition of monoamine oxidases has been demonstrated in animals. Therefore, nicotine may not be alone in explaining the addictiveness of tobacco. Key-words: Monoamine oxidase • Smoking • Addictiveness.
