Abstract

It is therefore a romanticized and idealized conception of shamanism that has seduced the imagination of certain Western subgroups that have appropriated it and, announcing that they want to preserve it, have reformulated it by embedding it in their own cultural matrix, that is that of radical modernity. Apart from a long indigenous tradition that indicates that ayahuasca can be used safely, little clinical data has been accumulated to date that would provide a solid scientific basis to support the idea that this preparation is not a danger to homme. If, by distinguishing the physical and psychic dimension of the individual, it is not possible - as we have seen in point 1.b. - to talk about the toxicity of ayahuasca, it is necessary not to minimize the existence of reactions that it is possible to understand from a psychopathological point of view. In the case of ayahuasca, the incidence of these psychopathological reactions seems rare, in adults or even in adolescents, even if no specific and detailed study allows an accurate evaluationxxvi. Finally, mention should also be made of the results of a study published in 2007, which evoke “the risks of distortion of affective perceptions, the overinvestment of personal experience and the primacy of subjectivism, the precariousness of instances of reality. This promotes paralogical, interpretative, intuitive and with a strong passionate connotation. This conviction leads to the adherence of the most vulnerable and suggestible subjects, a rigidification of psychic processes, an impoverishment and a narrowing of the emotional life around this object, the ayahuasca”
