Identities in Santo Daime: paths of tradition and innovation

Pages: 61 - 85

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how the concepts of "tradition "and" new age" are used to establish a difference between the two main groups linked to Santo Daime: the CICLU Alto Santo, founded by Raimundo Irineu Serra in 1954, and CEFLURIS (current ICEFLU) founded in 1974 by Sebastião Mota de Melo. The research is based on literature review, observation and experience with the groups, and the narratives of their representatives which are available at the publication ‘Traditional ayahuasca communities: building public policies to Acre’, in 2010. My objective is to analyze whether the daimistas identities are being modified to the point that it may have turned into two traditions: a tradition which works on orthodox ways, and the "new tradition", under construction, which has been incorporating new elements that come under the banner of "new people and new era".
