Abstract

Ayahuasca is an herbal concoction, prepared ancestrally for medical and religious purposes. Currently, it is used in healing therapies for drug addictions and the possibility of having properties against some neurodegenerative diseases is investigated. In this study, two plants that are part of the "ayahuasca" potion were used, Banisteriopsis caapi containing βcarbonyloid alkaloids and Psycotria viridis containing N.N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which were mixed to prepare a decoct. This was administered to 10 experimental animals, having 10 others as a negative control; the objective was to determine the effect of the ayahuasca potion on the body temperature of rats, measured at the rectal level, which it was measured every thirty minutes for ninety minutes. The rectal temperature varied in minutes 30 to 60, increasing from 36.18 to 38.03 ° C and from 36.15 to 38.03 ° C respectively with p <0.05. We can conclude that the ayahuasca potion produces changes in the body temperature of rats. Keywords: ayahuasca, temperature, dimethyltryptamine, DMT, harmaline.
