Classic Psychedelic in the Treatment of Dependences : On a deeper understanding of Ayahuasca and the experience of the Takiwassi Centre.

Abstract

Through the drafting of this elaboration, I wanted to explain the most recent scientific research into the use of classical psychedelics in the treatment of dependencies and, in particular, to discuss the assisted use of Ayahuasca. I also had a four-month journey to Peru, thanks to the University of Bologna, which gave me the opportunity to know in person and to analyse the treatment model proposed by the Takiwasi Centre, the first drug-addict therapeutic community based on the combination of traditional amazonic medicine techniques, contemporary psychotherapy practices and conventional medicine. This is a hybrid therapeutic environment where the ritualised use of Ayahuasca mainly covers the task of catalysing and amplifying psychological processes triggered by other conventional psychotherapeutic interventions, in order to increase their quality and make treatment more intensive and effective. Western strategies in turn improve the therapeutic potential of the different medicinal plants that are used, so the benefits of this cultural hybridization are mutual. It should be pointed out that Takiwasi should not be understood as a community where only Ayahuasca is used as a plant remedy, since, as has been demonstrated in the fourth chapter of this elaborate, the rehabilitation programme includes many other techniques of indigenous medicine and modern psychotherapy. The Takiwassi Centre does not believe that the potential of Ayahuasca is only from its pharmacological properties or the psychological effects of intake, but also from ritual, diets, emetic plants, master plants, co-existence, therapeutic assistance and all other additional measures that are designed to increase or contain its effects. Therapeutic assistance to the process of integration and implementation is also one of the most important elements to ensure that the intake of Ayahuasca leads to effective therapeutic benefits. In my view, it is essential to understand that the ritual of Ayahuasca is only part of the treatment and that in many cases real work begins when the ceremony is over. It means that therapeutic assistance is one of the most influential factors, since it allows patients to use and understand ceremonial experience as a means of developing a transparent personality, and to reflect on appropriate issues that can help him increase their existential perspective. It can be said that the aim of integration is to help each patient integrate in the most functional way its conscious and unconscious part, the past, the present and the future, its individual, its family and social dimension, its soul and body, its illusions and its reality (Fericgla, 2018). The use of Ayahuasca to engage in dependency issues is, however, a widespread therapeutic alternative throughout the Amazon region, where several ayahuasqueros, indigenous or metices, offer private treatment, more or less structured (Bouso et al., 2012).
