This essay takes some elements of Latin American political ecology to analyze the phenomenon of Ayahuasca’s commercialization, in the specific case of Iquitos, Peru. For this purpose we look at different documentary and ethnographic sources, mainly academic researches that have dealt with the phenomenon, especially from the perspective of tourism and the globalization, among others. The contribution of this article to the analysis of the commercialization of Ayahuasca, resides therefore in the point of view that Latin American political ecology allows, for instance to observe the actors at stake, the conflicts and the asymmetric relationships of power that come into play in the commodification. Finally, we propose the importance of including an actor that is usually overlooked: the Ayahuasca plant.
Keywords: Ayahuasca; Latin American political ecology; commodification; human-plant relationship.
