Abstract

The growing popularity of ayahuasca has led to a number of adverse effects of this shamanic practice. For a person who chooses to absorb this beverage, the choice of tradition is a source of information that can reassure the safety and quality of the experience. The growing practices in the Amazon and elsewhere in the world have made the approach more dangerous, because the anchoring of these new practices lacks clear and universal benchmarks, so the taking of ayahuasca is now multiformed. Ethnopharmacology offers modern scientific tools to gather reliable information while respecting the rights of the populations concerned. This multidisciplinary approach can objectively advance our knowledge and avoid confronting divergent views often expressed solely with the focus on practice. The author develops the idea that only continuous collection and the confrontation of value information allows a safe path to this approach of a non-ordinary reality with less risk.
