Cultural appropriation of spirituality using the example of Ayahuasca-Shamanism in the German-speaking region.

Abstract

In my work, I will first address the theoretical classification of the phenomenon of “cultural appropriation of spirituality.” Then I'll give an overview of the shamanimus itself, its origins and motives, and then focus on the ayahuasca shamanimus, the associated rituals, and the effect of ayahuasca. I then come to the item “Neo-Shamanimus and Ayahuasca in the West”, which I would like to discuss using three ayahuasca retreat providers from German-speaking countries as an example. In a conclusion, I explain my theses with reference to an article by critic Bani Amor, The Heart of Whiteness, Max Weber's assumption about the “disenchantment of the world” from Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism, Ulrich Beck's “individualization thesis” from his book Risk Society and Christian Ghasarian's essay Journey to the Inner Self: Neo-Shamanism and the Search for Authenticity in Contemporary New Age Travel Practice.
