Pictorial compositions at the funeral polls of the Napo phase. An iconographic and ethnoarchaeological perspective.

Pages: 91 - 110

Abstract

This article is an iconography study of the pictorial compositions of the funerary urns of the Napo phase (1168-1480 AD), framed within the vast Amazonian polychrome tradition. This iconographic approach is complemented by a semiotic and ethno-archaeological methodology which allowed for the identification of specific patterns in the construction of these designs. These figures intrinsic to a “Napo aesthetic” can be understood as a system of visual communication about the artistic structure of this archaeological phase.
