Abstract

In South America, a form of tourism has been developing for more than two decades, where Western travelers take the hallucinogenic potion of Ayahuasca. Ayahuasca has a central place in the self-understanding of native groups. “Master plants” of the rainforest are used by mestizos and natives for divine, witchcraft and for healing purposes. Ayahuasca is a breed that triggers vomiting, strong visual effects, intensified thinking processes and strong emotions. The motivation of Western tourists is often characterized by desires for personal insight, self-update, and spiritual experience, and hope for physical healing can also play a role. Ayahuasca tourism in South America can be regarded as a special form of psychedelic psychotherapy with some restrictions. Key words: Ayahuasca, Tourism, South America, psychedelic, shamanism
