On September 15, 2022, the Ig Nobel Prize for art history was awarded to the article "A multidisciplinary approach to ritual enema scenes on ancient Maya pottery" that appeared in 1986 in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology 16(2-3):213-262. This article built on the extensive photographic archive and iconographic research by archaeologist Nicholas Hellmuth and on the multidisciplinary explorations of intoxicating enema practices by ethnopharmacologist Peter De Smet.
