An accomplished linguist, he travelled widely in both hemispheres in his ethnomycological investigations; particularly noteworthy are his intensive studies of the use and significance of the sacred hallucinogenic mus~ooms still an integral part of the culture of Indians of southern Mexico. A prolific writer, he published many papers in technical journals and seven scholarly books.
