The major critical lenses explored in relation to psychedelics in this chapter — gender, ecology, race, and sexuality — offer insights into the structural causes of the environmental and social crises that are unfolding on our planet today. From the standpoint of gender studies, scholars are advocating for the importance of including diverse gender perspectives on the subject of drug experiences, both regarding first-hand accounts and academic research. In listening to women’s voices, this necessarily entails taking seriously accusations of abuses of power within psychedelic communities that disproportionately impact women and people of color. From environmental studies, scholars draw attention to the potential of psychedelics to deepen our respect for and relationship with the natural world. From postcolonial studies, scholars highlight the dangers of colonialist appropriations of indigenous knowledges and practices, emphasizing the value of subjugated knowledges apart from the values of Western culture. Lastly, queer studies investigates the relationships between psychedelics and sexual identity, focusing on the need to protect non-normative practices and the individual’s right to personal freedom over their body and mind.
Psychedelics represent diverse tools capable of deconstructing harmful patterns of behavior and limiting beliefs, increasing our awareness of possible avenues for enacting individual and social change. They force us to question our assumptions about the world, about ourselves, and about our relationships with human and non-human others. However, psychedelic insights require appropriate preparation and subsequent integration into the experiencer’s daily life in order to effect lasting change. While the dangers of misuse of psychedelic insights remain — such as their potential to induce trauma under unsupportive circumstances — we are now at a turning point where accumulated wisdom about risks and rewards provides adequate roadmaps for responsible psychedelic explorations of the human condition and our place on a rapidly changing planet. As the psychedelic renaissance renews interest in the topic of chemically-mediated altered states of consciousness, much more work is needed to develop and synthesize the intersecting fields represented in this chapter.
