Nomination file N° 00574 for Inscription on the representative list of the intangible cutural heritage of humanity in 2011 - Traditinal Knowledge of the Jaguar Shamans of Yurupari.
Although the ancestral knowledge for managing the territory - including the rituals, the Yuruparí sacred instruments, the sacred plants like the Yagé, Coca and Tobacco, and the wisdom that is concentrated in sacred sites - was handed to all ethnic groups living in the Yuruparí Territory, both in Colombia and in Brazil, it is only in the Pirá Paraná River basin that this knowledge has been preserved, is practised, and is transmitted from one generation to the next. In other zones, although there exist some elders who have this knowledge, the sacred instruments have been lost and so the necessary rituals for healing the world are not carried out. There are also no other successful experiences, such as those carried out by ACAIPI, in endogenous research that promotes the permanence of traditional knowledge and its daily use.
The nomination process of Hee Yaia Keti Oka for the list of intangible cultural heritage of the nation and with UNESCO, led to a rigorous process of consultation and dialogue with all inhabitants of the Pirá Paraná River and its tributaries. All relevant members from the different ethnic groups that inhabit the region were called to community meetings and therefore participated freely in the discussions on content, methodology and strategies to develop the current dossier.
