Gateways to numinous experiences, largely forgotten in today’s world, the psytrance festival is an ‘hyperdimensional’ realm where the individual is set free from cultural programming and has the chance to face the darkest parts of his or herself, resulting in the re-evaluation of social positions and structures. Old shamanic techniques are revived and new entheogenic sacraments are shaped in order to assist the completion of this process. Many aspects of psyculture still require serious study, for evidence shows that the majority of attendees at psytrance festivals experience unique and life-­changing experiences, chai, charas and changa taking the place of more traditional religious sacraments, and opening an avenue for authentic spiritual experience in an increasingly secular world.
