Abstract

This article presents the meaning of traditional rituals and practices for the urban indigenous youth by applying the concept of social capital. The ayahuasca ceremonies, cultural and political meetings are examined in the city of Rio Branco, Brazilian Amazon. The results indicate that these ritualistic practices increase the social inclusion of one's own ethnic group, other indigenous groups, and the White population since they can break down social barriers. In these new social networks the indigenous youth benefit from being an Indian due to recent sociopolitical changes that have opened a new space for them in the social structure and, therefore, they can use their symbolic social capital. Keywords: Brazil, Amazon, ritual, indigenous adolescents, social capital, urban space.
