Abstract

Since that plants from the subgenus Heteropsychotria have been characterized as species producing monoterpene indole alkaloids, the isolation of compounds 1 and 2 of P. stachyoides from the Northeast region of Brazil agrees with this distribution pattern, and suggests this class of compounds as chemomarkers of taxonomic importance for the classification of the Psychotria species in this subgenus (Simões-Pires et al., 2006). In addition, compounds 1 and 2 present an unusual skeleton formed by an intramolecular nucleophilic substitution leading to the condensation through N-1, and not through N-4, as observed for the other monoterpene indole alkaloids, and reported earlier only for P. correa from Panama Keywords: Psychotria stachyoides Rubiaceae Glucosilated monoterpene indole alkaloids
