Dimethyltryptamine was identified by GC/MS in a sample of dried leafy material that was subsequently identified as Psychotria viridis (Rubiaceae), a tropical shrub native to Central and South America that has ethnobotanical use as a hallucinogen by many indigenous peoples of tropical South America.
