Basic compounds have been detected in five Brazilian Piptadenia species by means of electrophoresis. Bufotenine was detected in P. contorta Benth., and P. moniliformis Benth. The seeds of P. leprostachya Benth. contained theobromine, a new constituent in Leguminosae.
