Participation of retinal mechanisms in DMT hallucinations

Pages: 455 - 457

Abstract

Intravenous injections of DMT (1-5 mg/kg) also caused a sharp decrease in spontaneous activity in individual fibers of N.opticus in addition to a reduction in visually evoked cortical potentials and light-induced phasic reactions of retinal neurons. The findings speak for involvement of retinal mechanisms in the occurrence of optical hallucinations and allow 5-HT to be lost as retinal transmitters.
