Dimethyltryptamine, A Do-It-Yourself Hallucinogenic Drug

Pages: 157

Abstract

Dimethyltryptamine is found in the seeds of Piptadenia peregrina and the leaves of Pristonia amazón¬ ica. It is perhaps possible to obtain an active form of this substance by aqueous extraction or preparing a "tea." However, it is relatively eas¬ ily prepared synthetically. The pharmacological properties of DMT as well as those of a closely related compound, diethyltryptamine, are virtually identical with LSD. The same type of hallucina¬ tions, distortions of consciousness, and bizarre behavior result from the administration of both substances. DMT differs in two important re¬ spects. The onset of a DMT psy¬ chosis is somewhat more rapid than that experienced with LSD and the duration is somewhat less. In addi¬ tion DMT is not effective unless injected either intravenously or in¬ tramuscularly. In summary, it appears that the powerful hallucinogenic drugs dimethyltryptamine and diethyltryptamine have been somewhat neglected in relation to enforcing legal safeguards. They are fully as dangerous to the casual thrill seeker as the more notorious LSD, mescaline, and similar drugs.
