Constituents of the bark of Virola Sebifera

Pages: 184 - 188

Abstract

From the bark of Virola sebifera (Aubly), N,N-dimethyltryptamine has been isolated as the only basic principle. p-Sitosterol has been identified as one of the major components of the neutral fraction. Phenolic and acidic fractions showed to be very complex mixtures of difficult resolution. The constituents of the bark of Virola sebifera (Aubly) (family Myristicaceae), known commonly as " Cuajo Negro" and " Camaticaro" and grown in the southern part of Venezuela, has been investigated chemically as a possible source of some of the intoxicating snuffs used by the Waica tribe and other South American Indians located in the Orinoco head water region (Venezuela). As a result, N,N-dimethyltryptamine has been found to be the only basic component present in this plant.
