Jung’s Confrontation with the Unconscious and Its Relation to Psychedelic Experience.

Pages: 2 - 18

Abstract

The problems that Jung identifies are real and should be taken seriously. At the same time, however, Jung could not have been aware of the extensive evidence showing that psychedelic substances are relatively safe when administered responsibly. As Jungian analyst and scholar Andrew Samuels suggests regarding other issues, we need to read Jung’s texts respectfully but also critically, prepared to recognize his prejudices and mistakes as well as his remarkably sound and timeless comprehension of psychological dynamics and issues. I have attempted to maintain that balance here.
