Drug Tourism in the Amazon

Pages: 16 - 19

Abstract

Shamans use sensory modalities in a managed way, to stage interior drama in natural settings by using a variety of odors, sounds, visual cues, and tactile aids to enhance the hallucinogenic effect. In traditional societies, visions were shared among people taking the drug together ritually—so-called stereotypic visionary experiences which function as an hallucinogenic script, impacting both the individual and the group. The tourist, on the other hand, is dependent upon the tour guide since s/he shares few ritual expectations. This makes him/her even more suggestible and open to charlatan manipulations.
