Chapter 1: The Temptation of St Anthony: On Chemical Mysticism

Pages: 58

Abstract

It should be stressed that the intention of the chapter is not to reject all claims of the revelatory powers of psychoactive drugs, only to argue that the tendency of advocates of psychedelic drugs from Huxley onwards to adhere to essentially religious concepts to account for the value of the psychedelic experience is philosophically problematic. More recent thinking on the epistemic potentials of the psychedelic experience is addressed in Chapter 3.
