Ayahuasca as a Catalyst for Psychotherapeutic Processes.

Abstract

This article is based on qualitative research which was conducted in order to generate an empirical hypothesis based on the therapeutic mechanisms of ayahuasca in their application to substance abuse treatment and treatment of other psychological ailments. Treatments assisted with ayahuasca can provide various types of psycho-spiritual processes that are valued in other therapeutic approaches. Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that ayahuasca interventions for substance abuse are, in some cases, very effective and can also be integrated multidisciplinary and multicultural treatments for addictions and treatments for other mental health challenges. Other clinical investigations are ongoing to validate the efficacy of ayahuasca dependency treatment, compared to current conventional treatments. The author understands ayahuasca assisted therapy as an intervention based on a ritual and not just as a pharmacological intervention and mentions various factors that can influence the results of treatment with ayahuasca.
