From the results described above, the following scheme for the metabolism of DMT may be provisionally drawn: N-Methyltryptamine <---DMT----> 6-OH-DMT----> 7-HIAA Tryptamine + 3-Indoleacetic Acid + DMT-N-Oxide -> 6-OH-DMT-N-Oxide Whether or not any of the metabolites of DMT play a role in the production of the psychotic phenomena must remain a question for future study. Additional studies indicate that the hydroxyl group in the above studied indole derivatives is most probably in the 6- rather than the 7-position.
