In conclusion, this work shows that 5-MeO-DMT is synthesized in vitro by a tissue resting inside the brain and thus may be of importance in brain function. The physiological and pharmacological effects of 5-MeO-DMT have been shown to be psychotomimetic in laboratory animals by several investigators (GESSNER& PAGE,1962; SMYTHIES et af., 1967; FUXEet al., 1972). There are also reports that the urine and blood samples of some schizophrenic patients contained a high level of 5-MeO-DMT (NARASIMHACHARI et al., 1971a,b). Therefore, it is conceivable that the rate of the biogenesis of the psychotomimetic compounds is significantly increased in schizophrenia other related disorders.
