As the forces of globalization act upon ayahuasca tourism through its associated flows of capital, knowledge, and individuals, we see a number of issues arise, such as: safety, outside appropriation, social change, and tradition-commodification. After looking into the summary of applicable positive and negative implications in the dimensions of sustainable development, we can make a firm final conclusion - ayahuasca tourism is affecting the development in Peru on many levels. The trend is strong and is not going to disappear anytime soon. The exact scope is difficult to measure or estimate, especially in terms of the economic development, where specific indicators require precise numbers. The main issue is that there is a limited amount of scientific literature sources and very limited information on the development subject in relation to ayahuasca tourism. Conducting this literature review was a very challenging experience, which required an immense deal of time just to locate, go through and identify related pieces of information in the whole ayahuasca related scientific literature. Yet, it was a very interesting area of research with many unexpected insights. Lack of scientific data creates a need for more field research to be done on this subject matter. Time will show, but it looks like an appealing option to do this kind of fieldwork when conducting and writing my International Development Studies master thesis next year.
