Pages: 120 - 128

Abstract

This article is a review that explores the use of Chacrona (Psychotria viridis Ruiz & Pav.) and Mariri (Banisteriopsis caapi Spruce ex Griseb. Morton) in the preparation of ayahuasca, a psychoactive drink commonly used in mystical-religious contexts. The plants, found in the Amazon region, are widely used in rituals by indigenous tribes. However, its use has become popular and thus, in addition to indigenous practices, ayahuasca has also been used by different religious doctrines and urban groups. The religious practice of consuming ayahuasca seeks to transcend the duality of Western thought, which separates mind and body, man and nature, male and female. These plants have been called "power plants" due to their ability to expand consciousness and perception of the world. With the growing popularization and recognition of ayahuasca, more studies have been carried out to understand its benefits in several aspects. The present study seeks to contribute to this understanding through a bibliographic review on the use of ayahuasca in a mystical-religious context in Brazil, reflecting on the aspects that make Chacrona and Mariri important plants in this context. Keywords: Chacrona, Mariri, ayahuasca, mystical-religious plant, rituals, transcendence, consciousness.
