The deceased man drank ayahuasca at a ceremony held by a person who had assumed the role of a “shaman”. This was well attested by other participants of the ceremony who had suffered no apparent ill effects after drinking the concoction. The police assumed the presence of DMT in the corpse, and requested a third party to carry out confirmatory toxicological analysis before we had become involved in the case. Contrary to Dos Santos et al.'s comments, we did not state that ayahuasca had caused the death of the young man. Also, our findings were mainly from the colon rather than the ileum.
