In conclusion, although the report by Wiltshire et al. is important because it shows the complex link between life-threatening reactions and the ingestion of ayahuasca ingestion, the report lacks substantial and convincing evidence to support the possible causal role of ayahuasca in the young man's death. Unfortunately, considering the limitations of the report and the inconclusive evidence of the suggested link in the scientific literature or the media, this case description only adds more “noise” in the investigation of this topic. In the future, studies on severe intoxications presumably associated with ayahuasca ingestion should offer better-quality forensic/toxicological information, especially in light of exaggerated or incorrect information that may have disproportional legal consequences.
